European markets close higher after a day of choppy trade

European stocks ended the day in the green on Monday after a choppy start to the week, with geopolitical tensions and concerns over the spread of the coronavirus on investors’ radar.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 provisionally closed 0.4% higher, after trading around the flat line for most of the day. Basic resources added around 1.6%, while travel and leisure stocks fell around 1.5%.

The French CAC 40 finished around 0.3% higher, as did Germany’s DAX. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 rose to provisionally close 0.8% higher, while Spain’s IBEX fell 1.1%.
