Asia-Pacific stocks rise after Wall Street surges to records following Biden’s inauguration
Shares in Asia-Pacific rose in Thursday morning trade after stocks on Wall Street sailed to record highs as U.S. President Joe Biden was sworn into office.
The Bank of Japan is expected to released its monetary policy statement at around 11:00 a.m. HK/SIN on Thursday.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.8% while the Topix index advanced 0.84%. South Korea’s Kospi advanced 0.53%.
Shares in Australia edged higher, with the S&P/ASX 200 up 0.55%.
Australia’s unemployment rate came in at 6.6% in December, according to seasonally adjusted estimates released by the country’s Bureau of Statistics on Thursday. That compared against expectations for a 6.7% reading in a Reuters poll, and followed November’s unemployment rate 6.8%.
MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan traded 0.22% higher.
