The Dow Jones industrial average fell 86.09 points, or 0.48 percent, to 17,787.13, the S&P 500 declined 2.11 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,096.95.
U.S. stock prices fell on Tuesday on weaker-than-expected economic data, while expectations of a possible Federal Reserve interest rate increase lifted the dollar to near a two-month high against a basket of currencies.
Asian stocks sagged on Wednesday as a slip in crude oil prices dampened investors' appetite for riskier assets, while the recently bullish dollar stalled against the euro and yen following a mixed bag of U.S. economic data.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.3 percent.
Japan's Nikkei lost 0.8 percent as the yen firmed.
